Brainshark Brings Mobile Bite to Powerpoint Presentations

Brainshark attempts to make presentations more interesting for viewers by allowing users to upload their video clips, Powerpoint files, documents or photos, then add audio by phone, microphone or MP3 upload. The company also wants to make them more useful for presenters by providing links for easy sharing and tracking statistics to follow the viewing figures. The features might sound simple enough but they’re also apparently needed enough to be used by a third of the Fortune 100 companies.

The company’s recently released Android app is targeted towards viewers rather than presenters, and that might not be a bad thing: audience figures are always bigger than speaker numbers.

The app offers five sections: Featured, a list popular presentations; My Company, a list of presentations the user has uploaded; eLearning, a collection of presentations; History to view previously seen content; and the Settings tab. It’s also possible to download documents and attachments, a useful function if you’re planning to work offline.

Presenters can’t upload new content but by logging into their accounts, they can view the presentations they’ve already uploaded and keep track of the latest viewing figures. The eLearning library contains more than 1,000 titles that range from sales and marketing advice to leadership development, management techniques and social media.

Navigation through a presentation is simple enough and makes use of a table of contents and slide thumbnails. The section also allows users to take part in interactive polls, surveys and test questions delivered through the presentations to an audience that’s pretty self-selected.

As a form of content, presentations may be an underserved format on the Web. Brainshark competes with Slideshare but both sites deliver content created by experts in a form that’s easy to absorb. They might not be as much fun as reading an article or kicking back with a YouTube how-to but Brainshark’s oral and video additions do make their presentations more enjoyable.
